It was January of 2018. Rachael had never been to Hoboken before. In fact, she lived over an hour away in Yonkers, NY when she’d gotten an invite from some acquaintances the day before the bar crawl. She didn’t even own a onesie, so she had to schlep all over town until finally procuring a grey polka dot one— at closing time in a JC Penny’s— which she would pair with some fuzzy white ear muffs for pizzazz.

Joe had lived in Hoboken for almost 7 years. He’d gone to school there and remained living there well after graduation. His roommate gave him his ticket to the bar crawl when something had come up at work. Probably not surprising to anyone, Joe already had a onesie in his wardrobe— a brown sock monkey onesie, complete with black button eyes, monkey ears, and a red pom pom on the hood.

On the second level of a bar named Birch, Joe introduced himself to Rachael and within minutes had asked her if she’d ever heard of the elephant walk. If nothing else, the man had moxie and he made Rachael laugh.

The night may have ended with Rachael palming Joe’s premature attempt to kiss her, but she still liked him enough to give him her number, which is all that matters now, right?
